Journal of Ophthalmological Society of West Bengal

Greetings from the desk of the Editor!
We are here with a special issue to commemorate the Glorious 80 years of our beloved society.

Ophthalmological Society of West Bengal was founded in 1942 under the leadership of Lt. Col. E.O.G. Kirwan C.I.E. The initial years saw the Society working from the Office of the Head of Department of Ophthalmology at Medical College and Hospitals, Kolkata. It later shifted to the 2nd Floor of 94 Chittaranjan Avenue, Kolkata-700012. The Society now has its own office in the Journal of Indian Medical Association (JIMA) building, Room no. 8 at 53 Creek Row, Kolkata- 700014, from where it functions. The activities of the Society centre around professional interests of ophthalmologists related to the state of West Bengal in India. The Society organizes periodical meets for academic improvement of its more than 1900+ life members, update meetings and also competitive sessions in various categories. It awards prizes, medals, fellowships and travel grants to deserving members and has a community ophthalmology wing which is involved in creating public awareness in key ophthalmological issues. The Society also safeguards the professional and legal interests of its members besides looking after the ethical practice of the profession. The Society regularly organizes CMEs, orations, mid-term meetings, and an annual Conference for its members.

The society primarily being a Scientific society took a leading role in preaching the science and arts in Ophthalmology in the form of webinars, seminars conferences, subspeciality meets and even district outreach programs which increased manifold in the last couple of years. To give you some example…Other than the Annual Conference, Joint conference between us and our Bangladesh counterpart, subspeciality seminars on Glaucoma, Oculoplasty, Retina to name a few. Our district outreach programs this year extended to Bankura, Durgapur, Siliguri, Malda, and Hoogly.

The strength of a society lies on the experience of their seniors as well as the enthusiasm of its youngsters. So as an inclusive society we are on focus to build our next-gen, and we are happy to get quite a handful of young energetic Young Ophthalmologists, who we are sure will be our successful torch bearer in the future.

To conclude my editorial I would like to thank all our contributors, who have sent their articles for publication in this journal. We are trying to set up an article bank for this journal and even from other parallel specialities. I would like to request our readers to send scientific articles to the editorial office and also encourage others to do the same.

Long live our society.
Long live our Journal.
