About OSWB

A Legacy of Vision, Leadership, and Service Since 1942
The Ophthalmological Society of West Bengal (OSWB) stands tall as one of the oldest and most prestigious professional medical societies in Eastern India. Founded in 1942 under the visionary leadership of Lt. Col. E.O.G. Kirwan C.I.E., OSWB has been at the forefront of advancing eye care and ophthalmic science for over eight decades.

A Historic Beginning, A Visionary Journey
What began in the corridors of the Department of Ophthalmology at Medical College and Hospitals, Kolkata, soon grew into a robust and dynamic platform for eye care professionals. Over the years, OSWB shifted base—first to 94
Chittaranjan Avenue, and now proudly operates from Room No. 8, JIMA Building, 53 Creek Row, Kolkata – 700014— a space that reflects its enduring commitment to eye health in West Bengal.

A Community of 1900+ Life Members and Growing
With a thriving network of over 1900+ life members, OSWB serves as a hub for knowledge sharing, clinical updates, and continuous learning. From seasoned experts to young ophthalmologists, the Society unites professionals with a
shared passion for excellence in eye care.

Fostering Excellence Through Events and Education

OSWB’s calendar is filled with impactful academic initiatives:

  • Regular CME programs (Continuing Medical Education)
  • Orations, mid-term meetings, and an annual flagship conference
  • Competitive sessions across categories to inspire research and innovation

The Society proudly rewards brilliance through medals, prizes, fellowships, and travel grants, encouraging members to contribute meaningfully to the field.

Commitment to Ethics, Advocacy, and Awareness
Beyond academic pursuits, OSWB safeguards the legal and professional interests of its members while upholding the highest standards of ethical medical practice. Its dedicated Community Ophthalmology Wing runs robust outreach programs, raising awareness on critical eye health issues among the public.
